Carpe deim. I'm hooked on this word the moment I heard Robin Williams, the inspiring teacher in Dead Poets' Society, uttered them.

Yes, life is short, and it zips past us. Before we knew it, another year has passed. If we don't document our lives down in a piece of history, what's there left of us for the world to remember and recall?

Sing, Sing Our Song!!!

My teenage years was spent in the 1980s, which happened to be the boom of Singapore-composed songs. Called xin yao, these songs composed by junior college or university students hit a chord with almost Singaorean who knew Chinese. They sang of our love and pain, the throes of studying, the hardship of working and starting a new family. Needless to say, xin yao spread like wildfire and gained immense popularity.

Sad to say, the talents faded away as they grew up and entered the workforce. I kept these songs buried in my heart for twenty years after that.

Then on 2 Aug, the memories were unleashed again. The ex-xin yao compatriots gathered at the Creative amphitheatre to belt out one song after another, tugging at my heart strings again and again, enabling me to relive the lost years in those precious 3.5 hours. Thank you for holding this concert, thank you for giving me the chance to walk down memory lane again.

If found, they're rather run-of-the-mill type of Singaporeanised versions, not the authentic Japanese fare. Not that I'm complaining. One needs to adapt to survive.
Hence other than Waraku, Ichiban Boshi and Sushi Tei, I was pleased to find Ma Maison, a French-Japanese food restaurant in the 2nd floor of Bugi Junction.

Another fusion restaurant that whet my appetite was Japanese-Italian fusion restaurant in the basement of Citylink - Shokudo.

The ambience of the restaurant was bright and clean with pinewood furniture and white chairs or sofas. The menu consists of Japanase soba in soyu or wagyu sauce/ soup, or spaghetti with miso paste or wagyu sauce. There is also the pizza, with a thin flat crispy crust, a welcomed change from the thick crust of Pizza Hut.

We started with an appetizer, Vietnamese springroll wrapped in rice paper.
Dark moments but what genius!

When my students can't stop uttering "Why sooo seerious? Let meee put a smile on that face!", I knew that Heath Ledger has left a deep impression through his portrayal of Joker in the latest Batman sequal "The Dark Knight".

Heath Ledger and Christian Bale (playing Batman) made their predecessors look like jokers. I daresay they're the best depiction of the villian and the hero. Even master actors, Jack Nicholson and George Clooney, paled in comparison to them.

Rumours has it that Ledger was consuming drugs during the shoot. Hence his highness may have enhance the fascinatingly haunting effects of the Joker. But if someone can get so high on drugs and still deliver his lines with such gusto, I'll give him credit for it. It's pure genius who can only such a feat. Pity Ledger is dead and we won't be able to relive his ingenuity again.

Christian Bale scored with me when he played the brooding vengeful hero in "Batman Begins". He was contained in his emotions, yet painful to watc...

Chuckles aside, Sunset Grill is indeed tug away at a faraway forgotten corner of Singapore. It's deep deep deep inside the Seletar Airbase, situated beside an old airfield where private jets take-off.

The decor reminds me pretty much of Pulau Ubin - plastic deck chairs and wooden round tables and bar-top chairs with aluminium bar-top tables lined the alfresco dining area. Strings of light bulbs dangled from one tree-top to another, beaming a warm glow as the sun sets. On a clear day, one is supposedly able to see one of the most beautiful sunsets in Singapore but alas, the sky was overcast when we arrive. But the breeze was a nice welcome as we set outdoors to enjoy our meal.

As the name suggests, the place is famous for its grill.
Babes In Singapore

My best friend, Viv, and husband, came for a long-overdue visit to Singapore last week, 12 to 13 July 2008.

They were not alone this time but had brought 2 new additions to the family to show off to the friends and relatives here.

Meet the young Mr Kalan Interrigi and their princess, Keisha Interrigi!
It was a good gathering of old friends who spend our youth days with Viv. Po Lin, Tzu Lin, Ann, Susan and I were there to catch up. And they brought their young offspring too.

There, I already saw young and old, men and women, Chinese, Malay and Indians, set aside their differences for the clash of the titans.

It was a sea of red when I entered the stadium. I feel this way at times too. And I'm sure my students feel the same, when class attendance for that day dipped.

However, my mind will change now that I know him. He was a first year student at the place which I teach. He gets off at Woodlands MRT station, takes the lift to level one instead of the escalator. At the exit of the MRT station, the staff opens the door for him and whisked him past. After that, he's on his own as he began the wheelchair journey on his own from the MRT to the school, a good 15-minute walk.

I don't know his name or where he gets the make of his fantastic transport - a motorised wheelchair to save him the arduous task of whisking himself by sheer muscle through the 15-min walk down the cement road, and with 3 traffic lights to cross.

However, he's on his way to school rain or shine and he's never late.
Happy Birthdays to Us

Not just one present, but 3 presents!!

It was such an overkill that soon, you ran out of ideas to give each other presents. So unromantic right, it's been only 3.5 yrs of marriage and we're already facing this isuse (wry smile).

Oh well, so for our birthdays this 2008, we treated each other to dinner, not just one, but 3 meals, all of them divine meals! The food was soooo darn good that we felt that the restaurant deserves to be listed in Conde de Nast in Heaven!!

For my birthday, we went to Grill Out in Sunset Way and what a transformation this place has undergone! It's now like Holland V number 2 with heaps of eateries. Grill Out has a fabulous and friendly manager who obviously knows his food well and knows his way to mingle with the customers.

For Ken's big day, we went to Ministry of Food at Bugis (great salad and tempura, ohhhh), Rosette (great beef pattie) and lastly Aston at Katong (affordable and...

The ever affable Dong Suhua surely has her charms.

But once she started talking on how news readers act as a bridge between the audience and the world (I must thank her for customising the topic so well to suit the target audience in RP), I was entranced. It was as if I was transported back to journalism life 10 years ago, reliving the excitement and buzz in the newsroom.

I left cos I could not took the pressure cooker anymore. But not Suhua. She stood by her post and got duly rewarded. She received her 10 year service award and won the Star Award 4 times. This was no mean feat as none of the news readers have done it before.

Public credibility and steadiness take time to nurture and mature.
The Night Wii Let Our Hair Down

Nintendo has invented this magical new gadget called Wii, and wow wee, what a hit it was worldwide! It took the world by storm, more than X-box or PSP. It ran out of stock during Christmas last year and the ever oncoming onslaught of games just left you hungry for more!

It's great for bonding, and destressing. Some of the console games are downright silly, but my colleagues and I in CCC looovvve it! I was hooked once I played it. We went to Cedric's house to play one night. After a few rounds of vodka, red wine and ice cream, Wii made us let our hair down. Here are some of the hilarious shots.

New insights on "poor"

I learnt a new definition of "poor" and "a simple life" from my students which opened my eyes, I mean they were really wide open at the end.

In their presentation, one student quoted a comment from a forum site, which said something like "property prices are kept high by the govt to keep citizens poor". Hmm... interesting. So I asked if the class if they believed the statement. They did, ok, most S'poreans would jump at the chance to complain about the govt. So I asked what they understand by "poor". They said it means having just enough to spend and not have money for luxury items like Prada, Gucci, Nike or Addidas. I drop dead, flabbergasting!!!

That is "poor"? What about the old ladies who scrap for cans and cardboard to make ends meet? "Oh, that's because they don't want to depend on their children, they're very independent", came the confident answer. Er....so what about the garung guni man who pick another man's junk as his treasure for an income? "They make big money, cher. The ...

Holidays!!!

This has been a loooonnnng and tiring holiday. 10 weeks of school holiday and I'm stuck in Singapore cos husband and I are working on neverending lists of projects. Sometimes, I wonder why we work so hard, is there an alternative lifestyle? Is there a way out of our drudgery? Is there a hole to escape from everything here and do whatever we want? Is there .......

Maybe it's because of all the "is there" that caught me when I was passing through Suntec City last weekend. We saw the Chan Brothers travel fair beckoning me, every country looked so enticing as long as it's not Singapore and there's no work.

The tour package for China were the most competitive. I've not been to Shanghai for 10 years since work brought me there in 1999. Everyone tells me it has changed by leaps and bounds in 10 years, it's a different city now, Singapore pales in comparison, blah blah blah.

So I smsed my boss on the spot, got him to approve my leave in June and paid my deposit.
Goldie's gone

Husband has been very sad recently. The arrowana fish, Goldie, which he has been rearing for the past year disappeared from the fish tank one nite. He woke up in the morning to find his precious Goldie gone. We looked everywhere - the kitchen, the tank, the balcony, the drainage holes. We even went downstairs to see if it has jumped, but no Goldie was seen.

Husband said it felt liked losing a family for he has bonded with the fish. He believed that arrowana fish can sense human emotions and would protect its owner from harm. His brother used to have an arrowana which knocked itself blind into the wall of the fish tank, and the brother averted harm in an accident. Husband felt that Goldie must have sensed something coming his way and has sacrificed itself to protect him. On the nite before Goldie was discovered missing, the tian-zhu which he was wearing broke into two. He believed the two incidents are connected somehow. We went for prayers and hop...

Agent Bee and agent Susan spent a hell of a time eating, shopping eating and watching movie "Juno". We felt like tai-tais :-) The day started with good old traditional breakfast fish ball noodles at Old Airport Rd hawker centre. Amazing how agent Susan is impressed by these round little balls. That done, the malls craving beckon and we made our way to VivoCity and spent much time and fun poring over and trying shoes, accessories and fashion. Of course we could not get away without buying anything. The temptations are just too too great to resist! Lunch at Sushi Tei was yummilicious!!! We did not order the usual from the conveyor belt but tried more exotic dishes like pregnant fish, yellowtail sashimi and tea pot soup. Oh my god, everything is so fresh and heavenly! The movie Juno did not disappoint after much raving from the review community. Ell...

We made a visit recently on the weekend of 23-24 Feb, this time with my collelagues Vicky and Diana.

The old town of Malacca hasn't changed much. The Red House, Makhota Mall, Jonker Walk are still there. The white haired old man in the junk sale lane, the lady selling clogs in the nite market, the chicken rice ball, juiciest pow and heavenly chendol are all still waiting for us.

Here's a summary of the sights and sounds, food and tourists of old Malacca.

A day to remember in history

It seemed like an odd place to received good news, but I was on public transport when the news came on TV Mobile on channelnewsasia, showing a sea of red at the Padang, contrasted with a sea of blue in Greece. You see the familiar faces - PM Lee Hsien Loong, Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean, Vivian Balakrishna, etc. By now, you must have guessed something really really important is brewing.

The white-haired man in the suit in Greece took an envelope from a young chap and said the fateful words: the rights to host the first inaugural Youth Olympics would be awarded to the (tiny, did I hear him say tiny? I can't remember) city of Singapore!

Shouts, screams, hugs, confetti erupted on the TV screen. PM and Teo Chee Hean looked ecstatic, I mean it's not a faked expression but they looked really really really pleased! I'm sure they must be, it'll be one major historical event to remember in the reign of PM and a big leap for a tiny red dot. I'm equally pleased and would have shouted if I'...

Keeping the romance alive

Having being married for 3 yrs, I noticed the frequency of celebrations and the rate of giving presents to each other tends to decrease with each passing year.

Noticed the first year - we celebrate everything: 1st meeting, 1st date, confirmation day, Valentine's day, first kiss, ROM, wedding day, etc. So many occasions, so many opportunities worth celebrating.

Then as years go by, memory fades, the feelings are still there, I'm sure of it, but work and life just consumes us that leaves no room for ourselves sometimes.

So celebrating this year's Valentine's was quite a challenge. We agreed to do it on 12 Feb, but work caught up with the husband. On 14 Feb, we ended up having to eat with the family. So it was a very very pleasant surprise, when the husband produced a big bouquet of roses out of nowhere in the morning just before we left the house. No wonder he made it a point to keep me out of the kitchen! Haha, little gesture...

I think for her, it's meaningful that all her children managed to come back on the same day to have a meal with her. Often, we're so caught up with our work schedules that we hardly had time to dine as one family, or will visit her on separate days every week, and the sibling hardly eat at the same table. Her voices are spiritually uplifting as she belts out songs after songs of love songs which sings of hope after break-ups or successful romance.

If you've heard of Yong Qi, Chong Bai, Fen Shou Kai Le, etc...you'll know what I mean.

She sings well in the recording studio and she does not disappoint in public - one of the rare singers in fact who could hold her fort without cracking. I don't know is it her petite size or her songs or her image, but her fans seemed to shower her with care, like one would care for a delicate flower. They cheered loudly and whistled only when asked to, otherwise, they seemed contented to wave their lighted batons in rhythm with her songs. Haha, there were some awkward pauses when she ended one song and the audience were not sure whether to clap or cheer unless she say so. Hehe, such as docile fan following :-)
...
